Managing Your Subscription
Starting a Subscription
- Navigate to Account → Billing
- Click Upgrade Plan
- Select your desired plan
- Enter your payment information via Stripe's secure checkout
- Your new plan activates immediately
Viewing Your Current Plan
Your billing page shows:
- Current Plan: Your active subscription tier
- Usage: Active automations vs. plan limit
- Next Billing Date: When your subscription renews
- Payment Method: Card on file (last 4 digits)
Upgrading Your Plan
Everything is managed right on the Account → Billing page — you never leave for an external portal. Upgrades take effect immediately; if a card is on file you're charged the prorated difference for the rest of the current period.
- Go to Account → Billing
- On the plan you want, click Upgrade
- If you don't have a card on file yet, you'll be sent to a secure checkout to add one
- New limits apply immediately
Downgrading Your Plan
Downgrades to a lower paid plan take effect immediately, and the unused portion of your current plan is automatically credited to your account toward your next invoice.
If you're using more than the new plan allows, a quick step-by-step dialog asks you to choose what to keep active within the new limits (circuits first, then automations, then API keys). Everything you don't keep is disabled, not deleted — your underlying network services keep running unchanged, and you can turn items back on later if you upgrade again.
An automation that controls a circuit you don't keep is disabled automatically — the dialog greys it out so you're never left with an automation pointed at a disabled circuit.
Canceling Your Subscription
Canceling means moving to the free Free plan. On Account → Billing, the Free plan card's button is your single Cancel Subscription action.
- Go to Account → Billing
- On the Free plan card, click Cancel Subscription
- Confirm in the dialog
Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period — you keep full access to everything you've paid for until then. When it lands, your account moves to Free and everything is paused. No data is deleted. The next time you sign in you'll be asked to choose what to re-enable within the Free plan's limits (or pick a paid plan); see Account recovery below.
Payment Methods
Accepted Payment Types
- Credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover)
- Debit cards
- ACH bank transfers (custom plans)
Updating Payment Method
Card details are collected through Stripe's secure, PCI-compliant checkout — Unthrottle never sees or stores your card number. You'll be prompted to enter a card the first time you start a paid plan, and any time a payment needs a new card on file.
Failed Payments & Account Recovery
If a payment fails, Stripe automatically retries the charge over the next several days.
- During retries (grace period): app access is paused and automations stop running, but nothing is disabled. As soon as the payment clears, everything resumes automatically — no action needed on your part beyond fixing the card.
- If retries are exhausted (suspended): your account is frozen and your circuits, automations, and API keys are disabled (not deleted). Your underlying network services keep running unchanged.
The next time you sign in, a recovery screen blocks the app until you choose how to proceed — update your payment method to restore your plan (everything you had comes straight back), or switch to the free Free plan and pick which items to re-enable within its limits. Nothing else works until you complete this step.
Billing Cycle
Monthly Billing
- Charged on the same day each month (based on signup date)
- Invoices sent via email with itemized details
- Accessible in Stripe portal billing history
Annual Billing
Annual plans offer a discount equivalent to 2 months free. Contact sales for annual billing options on Pro or custom plans.
Prorating
When you upgrade mid-cycle, we calculate the remaining value of your current plan and apply it as credit toward your new plan. You're only charged the difference.
Example: Mid-Cycle Upgrade
Current plan: Starter ($10/mo) → Upgrading to Pro ($40/mo)
Days remaining in period: 15 of 30
Credit from Starter: $10 × (15/30) = $5.00
Pro charge: $40 × (15/30) = $20.00
Prorated charge: $20.00 - $5.00 = $15.00
Next full charge: $40 on your next billing date
Usage Limits
Automation Limits
Each plan has a maximum number of automations you can create. This includes both enabled and disabled automations.
| Plan | Circuits | Automations | Event History |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 0 | 1 | 3 days |
| Starter | 2 | 5 | 7 days |
| Pro | 15 | 25 | 30 days |
| Business | 50 | 100 | 90 days |
| Custom | Unlimited | Unlimited | 1 year |
Exceeding Limits
When you reach your plan's limit:
- You cannot create new automations or circuits
- Existing automations continue to function
- A notification appears suggesting an upgrade
- Events older than your retention period are cleaned up
Promotion Codes
Promotional codes can be applied during checkout for percentage or fixed-amount discounts. Stripe validates codes in real-time.
Applying a Promotion Code
- During checkout, click "Add promotion code"
- Enter your code and click "Apply"
- The discount will be reflected in your total before you confirm payment
Promotion Code Rules
- One promotion code per subscription
- Codes may have expiration dates or usage limits
- Some codes are restricted to first-time customers only
- Discounts may apply once, repeat for a set number of months, or apply forever depending on the underlying coupon
